What type of spider in chicago has green,black and yellow stripes on it’s back and is very big?

This spider was seen in a big web in a bush on Clarendon and Montrose of Chicago. It was just strange to see a spider like that was thinking it could be a garden spider.

    Most possibly it is a garden spider. You can look up an image and you’ll be able to tell. But if the body and legs are black, the stripes on the abodomen are yellow/green, and the web has a small area where there is more webbing and it looks like a name is stitched in it, then it more than likely is a garden spider. There’s a legend about the garden spider’s web, too. It’s a bit extreme, but the legend is that whatever name is written in its web is the name of the next person to die….grotesque but I didn’t make it up…..

    It’s called the Argiope, garden spider, scribble spider, or zipper spider. I’ve heard that the “scribble” is so birds don’t fly into the webs and ruin them, but that may just be a myth. They’re harmless, just large and terrifying to arachnophobes. (If you’re an arachnophobe, don’t click on the links. Lots of pictures of big spiders.)
