If you go to Metromix.com, they have a list of all the events for parents and kids. If that doesn’t help, go to

Millennium Park is a huge hit with kids. The Crown fountain is always a kid-magnet.

Grant Park. Taste of Chicago will be going on. It a food festival from about 75 different restaurants. There is free music and so many thing for the kids to do. At dusk the fireworks began. They are set to music.
Buckingham fountain light up a dusk until the fireworks end.
Between the tasting all the food at the Taste of Chicago and the fireworks, hop on a free trolley to Lincoln Park and go the Lincoln Park zoo. Zoo and trolley are both free. Kids will enjoy both.
The north end of Grant Park is call Millennium Park, it has sculptures that kids enjoy especially the one that shows the faces of people and then squirts water randomly. Another is a reflecting sculpture that looks like a fun house mirror in the shape of a bean.
Nearly all of Chicago Parks are connected. You can walk along the beach.

LINCOLN Park. It is beautiful, close to Lake Michigan, and they have an awesome, free, zoo there. The 151 bus runs right in front of the zoo. I cannot believe no one else has suggested this beautiful place to you!

Since you’re planning on going July 3, most of the popular parks will be very busy (holiday weekend) so expect big crowds. I’d suggest Lincoln Park zoo, but because it’s the holiday weekend, it will probaby be packed. The kids might have trouble seeing all the animals because of the crowds, but if you think it will be ok, go for it.
I’d also suggest the Garfield Park conservatory on the near west side. It’s very easy to get to (take the Green Line train from downtown) and it might not be as busy as the zoo. There are a bunch of pretty cool plants to check out, from giant palm trees that reach the ceiling of the conservatory to tiny cactus plants. There’s a big open park behind the building and there’s currently an art exhibition called “Niki in the Park” with giant colorful sculptures, with a few of them that kids are encourage to climb on. You could pack a picnic lunch and sit out in the park behind the conservatory. In addition, there’s a market place connected that is open on the weekends. There should be a band playing.
There’s also going to be a kite flying exhibition at Navy Pier’s Gateway park which they might like.
